Student voice

Every couple of weeks throughout the academic year, SU staff go out onto campus to talk to all students about key issues.

The aim is to ensure that all students are represented and have a voice at the SU and that students directly impact changes that are made across campus.

For an idea of the stuff we're talking to students about this year, see below.

 

2018-19 Academic Year

Students' first weeks on campus and the SU welcome events

8th - 21st October 2018

For the first few weeks of this semester, we've been talking to students about their experiences being welcomed on to campus, regardless of whether they are a new or returning student to UEA.

In particular, we're looking at their experiences with trying something different, making new friends and their perceptions of SU events and activities to socialise with other students.

We are currently working on improving the Welcome Week for September based on your feedback.

Student timetabling and space on campus

22nd October - 4th November 2018

At this point during term, we're out and about chatting to students about their experiences with timetabling and space on campus.

In particular, we're looking at the suitability of teaching rooms and the time it takes students to get to and from their classes across campus.

Lecture capture

5th November - 18th November 2018

Recently, Jenna, your Undergraduate Education Officer wrote a blog on lecture capture. Lecture capture refers to the recording (audio or visual) of typically lectures or other teaching activites.

Other universities implement this technology to help their students when it comes to revision or furthering understanding of topics. We're out speaking to students about their perspectives on lecture capture at UEA.

Costs on Campus

19th November - 2nd December 2018

These two weeks we've been out and about trying to find out more about the costs that students encounter on campus and as part of their course, to help understand where improvements can be made across all UEA.

Services on Campus

3rd December - 16th December 2018

This time, we've been speaking to students about the different services on campus and their experiences with them, to ensure that they are working for students.

We are currently working on improving our services on campus and offering a greater variety of food, particularly food for international students in the shop(su). Also, the money raised in our services goes back into uea(su) so we can continue to offer you all the appropriate support you need during your time as a student.

Student Support Services Refurbishment

14th January - 27th January 2019

Student Support Services is getting a refurbishment, so we're out speaking to students to see what you'd like it to look like! We'll then feed this back to the university, to ensure the new space is welcoming, functional, and in-line with your vision.

The report went to the University Space Management Group who will be using your feedback to create the SSS building that students want.

Accommodation Options on Campus

28th January - 10th February 2019

This week it's all about accommodation options on campus - UEA is looking at the options offered and we want to make sure that your voices are heard! Proposed options include alcohol free flats, and considerate living flats (set quiet hours).

We are currently talking to the University about the high costs for accommodation on campus and trying to improve things for students. We are also working with the UEA Accommodation Office to review the range of accommodation on offer and looking at possibility of introducing a small amount of considerate living flats.

 

Off Campus Housing

11th February - 24th February 2019

We're interested in how you look for accommodation off campus and what plays a part in your decision making process - are you on spareroom, the official facebook housing group, or have you used Home Run? Whatever your preference, we're out speaking to you!

We are currently looking at the possibilities of releasing our Home Run list earlier in the year based on your feedback, or having more than one list release day. We are also looking on improving our advertisement across campus + the support offered to students when finding a house.

 

Extra-curricular Activities

26th February - 12th March 2019

We want everyone to have an amazing time at UEA, and part of that is ensuring that you've got opportunities to develop skills and meet people outside of your degree. So, this week we're talking to students about the activities that are available to them on campus, including the Do Something Different festival, to try and tackle some of the barriers that students face when it comes to extra-curricular activities.

We are currently working to make the Do Something Different Programme more accessible for everyone, we are holding follow-up focus groups with students throughout May to ensure that activities are catered to all students.We know that students love the sports drop-in sessions and we want to keep looking at ways to ensure that there are low commitment & low-cost opportunities on offer throughout the year.
