movember concludes

As Movember draws to a close, I want to share some of the huge successes we've had in this year at UEA, and explain why this campaign is so important to so many of our students.

Developed in 2003, the campaign has grown and grown like an unruly ‘tash and is now at the forefront of men’s health research and support for some of the biggest issues faced by men- prostate and testicular cancer, mental health awareness, and suicide prevention.

 

What's it for?

When most people think of Movember they think of tackling cancer which was the original aim of the campaign and remains a huge part of what the organisation do. But now it’s not the entirety of their work now.

Mental health is a growing issue internationally with a lot of stigma still surrounding poor mental health, particularly amongst young men. The Movember team decided to get involved in this, doing loads to challenge stigma whilst also supporting active campaigns around the globe. By getting involved in Movember by either growing a mo’, moving for money or just donating you’re helping to tackle some of the most important issues for men - It's vital work and growing more important year on year.

A big part of what Movember does is raise money to support the work of the wider charities. From funding clinical research to running awareness raising video campaigns, Movember is more than raising money for the sake of it and the cash given is put to work to make things better for men across the globe.

Over the last four weeks, students and staff at UEA have made an amazing effort to raise money for the cause. Right now, Men’s Rugby alone have raised over £2,000! Across the campus we have hit the £7,000 mark which is an amazing achievement and makes me incredibly proud of everyones efforts. 

As well as growing a tash, this year the charity encouraged everyone to 'move it' for movember, promoting the benefits pf physical activitiy and giving a broader range of students a chance to get involved. Here at UEA we hosted a football tournament, sports challenge, and even our very own Shave Off in Blue Bar! As well as this, there's been some incredible invidiual achievements, including:

  • Joe Skeet at UEA Sport has set the challenge of moving 200 miles in November and has so far raised over £1,000!

  • Charles Mascall, the UEA Men’s Rugby Team Movember Captain, has almost raised £500 

 

Spending Aussie Dollars in Norwich...

The money raised as part of Movember is spent on some incredible things. From tackling the stigma surrounding male mental health to researching prostate cancer, some pretty big things are funded through people growing moustaches and moving for Movember. What you might not be aware of is that world-leading research here at UEA was financed by Movember funds back in 2012.

Working with Professor Colin Cooper, two PhD students (David Mason-Bahr and Marcel Hanna) were part funded by a Movember $1M AUS grant given to UEA and a group of other universities to research how to better diagnosis prostate cancer. Almost all men will at some point in their life develop prostate cancer but the correct diagnosis of a “pussy cat” or a “tiger” cancer can really help in deciding what to do about that diagnosis. Our fantastic efforts around raising money mean that experts like Professor Cooper can keep working to improve the lives of men around the world. The stuff happening here at UEA is honestly ground-breaking and it makes me proud that money raised funds such impactful things so locally.

 

Mo money, mo problems

Again, to bring things closer to home, you might be interested to learn that right now UEA research staff are putting together a bid to the Movember team to secure funding that will focus on men’s mental health and suicide prevention.

Having experts on campus can only help our students today whilst working to make the lives of students and other people in the future better. So as Movember comes to an end, keep digging deep and supporting the campaigns now and the research set to bring about the answers.
