Now that Halloween has gone, we need to move onto the next great thing which is already here… Christmas! lol just kidding, it’s MOVEMBER TIME.  

The time of year has come around again where Movember is sweeping across the university in the hope of raising money and change the face of men’s health. Last year the UEA Movember campaign raised over £7,500 and this year we are raising the bar higher with a target of £10,000. 

The Movember campaign has been running since 2003 and has since funded 1,250 men’s health projects globally. The aim is to help men live happier, healthier and longer lives.  

The three main causes that Movember supports are prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health and suicide prevention.  

 

Why is this so important?  

Men’s health is in crisis with them dying on average six years earlier than women with typically preventable reasons.  

The aim for them, for everyone, is to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.  

 

How can I help?  

There are so many ways to get involved whether you’re part of a sport club, a society or you’re an individual wanting to make a change. You don’t have to be male to get involved, everyone can raise money! 

 

How to sign up to fundraise? 

  1. Google Movember. uk.movember.com 

  1. Sign up via Facebook or email. 

  1.  Set your goals and upload a picture. 

  1. Join a team or create one for your club/society. 

  1. Join the UEA challenge. 

  1. Set up Facebook fundraiser through the Movember website.  

 

What can you do to fundraise? 

  1. Grow a mo: your moustache can inspire donations, conversations and real change.  
    a. Sign up and choose to grow this Movember
    b. Start growing your moustache, it will take the spotlight and initiate conversations
    c. Make it count by asking friends and family to back your Mo. 

  2.  Move for Movember: get running or walking 60km over the month. That is 60km for 60 mean we lose to suicide each hour, every hour across the world.  You don’t need to be an amazing athlete, just taking part and raising donations for doing it will make a difference.  

  3. Get hosting: get everyone together and raise essential funds for men’s health. It doesn’t matter what you do whilst you’re together. Here are some ideas to inspire you: cooking a lovely dinner, setting up a sports match, a party or even a ‘Shave Down’-a group shave off of facial hair to get started. 

  4. In the workplace: it’s not just engaging your staff with Movember but also your customers. You can sign up solo, start a team, or organise a competition between multiple offices. 

  

So what are UEA and uea(su) doing this month in aid of Movember? 

UEA Movember Men’s Football Tournament 

  • Cost: £20 entry per team – all entry fees go to the charity 

  • Date: Friday 15th November 2019 

UEA Movember Mixed Netball Tournament 

  • Cost: £20 entry per team – all entry fees go to the charity 

  • Date: Thursday 21st November 2019 

  • Time: 19.00-21.00 

  • Location: Sportspark Hall

UEA Movember Mixed Touch Tournament 

  • Cost: £20 entry per team – all entry fees go to the charity 

  • Date: Saturday 23rd November 2019 

  • Time: 12:00-16:00 

UEA Movember Pool Tournament 

  • Cost: £10 entry per pair – all entry fees go to the charity 

  • Date: Sunday 24th November 2019 

  • Time: tbc 

  • Location: UEA SU Red Bar

Movember Miles

  • Cost: Free 

  • Date: Every Tuesday 8am and Thursday 5pm we will be putting on a free 5km run around UEA campus that people can take part in to show their support for the campaign. 

  • Time: Tuesdays 08:00 & Thursday’s 17:00 

  • Location: Start outside the Sportspark main entrance 

  • Where to book: No need to book just turn up. 
     

‘Say hello to a mate’ Mental Health Training 

This training aims to provide student club committee members with the knowledge to reduce the stigma around talking about mental health issues, teaching them how to have difficult conversations and equipping them with the correct signposting routes to pass on to students they believe needs assistance. We will be running 3 male only and 3 female only training sessions throughout November. This training is not compulsory for clubs but we hope that clubs want to engage with the campaign as it will be beneficial to enable them to support of their club members.
