union council roundup

It’s time for another Union Council round up!

For those of you that might not know, Union Council is a vital part of our democratic structure and gives students the chance to be part of the decision-making process at uea(su). It is open to every single UEA student but for those who weren’t at the last 2 meetings, here’s everything you need to know!

24th January Council:

We went through the Student Officer Reports on SOC (student officer committee) and discussed what I’ve been up to over the last month including:

  • Local election hustings are taking place on the 28th March which I am organising in collaboration with City College Norwich and NUA Officers. We are encouraging all students to register to vote leading up to the hustings and will have members of the council attending encouraging students to do so. You never know when a General Election or referendum may be called!

  • I'm really excited about the work I am doing with the priority campaign, your money counts, this semester. I will be taking a paper to the Student Experience Committee with our views on supporting students and recommendations around laundry and rents on campus.

We had an open discussion to get feedback on smoking on campus and how it effects students.

We also passed these new policies:

  • Policy Lapse Policy (An Amendment to the Bye-Laws)

  • SWP off our campus

 7th February Council:

We went through the Student Officer Report and discussed the following:

  • Focus groups taking place on the 12th and 13th of February 4-5pm which will be exploring the options of: alcohol free, considerate living, dietary requirement and green flats.

  • I took a paper to the Student Experience Committee which looked at Costs on Campus which includes the Your Money Counts campaign work I did before Christmas.

  • Go Green Week is coming! (11th - 15th February) We have a clothes swish event, a Go Green Fayre and other activities during the week. See my blog here to find out more about what’s going on- can you link that blog?

  • Planning Reclaim the Night.

We passed the following policy:

  • NUS National Conference Motion: Fund the Postgraduate Committee

  • NUS National Conference Motion: Fund Free Education by Expropriation

  • Support the Fight for Marriage Equality in Northern Ireland

  • A Smoke-Free UEA

  • A generation of lifesavers

Now that you’re all updated, why not have your say and come to the next meeting? It’ll be on Thursday 28th of February. All students are welcome, even if they aren’t councilors, you will just need to give me an email to let me know that you will be coming or staff in the room that you’re here for Council, s.atherton@uea.ac.uk.
