Postgraduate life at UEA: an introduction

If you’ve just joined us, welcome to UEA! If you’re returning to postgraduate study for another academic year, welcome back! With much of the focus of freshers’ week being on undergraduates, I’d like to use this blog to introduce you to the facilities on campus dedicated to postgrads, Postgraduate(su), and the events we have on offer so far.

In Union House we have a dedicated Graduate Centre consisting of: Scholars Bar, Scholars Lounge, the Graduate Kitchen, and two bookable study rooms. You can find a map of Union House at the end of this article.

There are also two spaces in the library which are dedicated to postgraduate students on floor 2: a PGT study room and a PGR study room. Both spaces have PC’s and storage lockers which can be issued for 7 days at a time. A new PGR space is being prepared at Constable Terrace, so keep an eye out for news on this.

Postgraduate(su) is the arm of the students’ union which is dedicated to postgraduates. We run events and represent your interests within uea(su) and the University.

Postgraduate(su) also organises the Postgraduate Assembly which I’m accountable to as your Postgraduate Education Officer. The Assembly is open to all postgraduate students, and is an informal, social gathering of students with FREE pizza and drinks, which also offers a space to discuss issues you may face while studying at UEA. The first meeting  is on the 2nd October where we’ll be electing a new Postgrad committee . It’s a great way to meet other postgraduate students and have your say in the decisions uea(su) makes. There’s no need to register to attend, just show up.

This year, we want to offer you the best events to choose from so keep checking our platforms for new events which will appear throughout the year. There are events already happening throughout Freshers’ week for postgrads. If you’ve just started a master's course, why not get to know your new course-mates by heading to our wine and cheese evening this Friday? If you don’t know anyone, don’t worry, events are a great way to meet new people.

If you have an idea for an event we should run, you can submit it to our ‘Great Big Postgraduate Event-Off' by clicking here. Other students can then vote for the events they’d like to see happen.

As things will change throughout the year, make sure you stay up-to-date with Postgraduate(su). Make sure to follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook and keep checking the dedicated Postgrad pages of our website

Don’t just study, but have a great time too!

In case something is not quite right, please do get in touch: we work for you!
