Getting involved in sport is a fantastic way to meet like-minded people or to have a break from your studies, and I want to make sure that all postgraduates have as much access to this as possible. For those of you that might not know, aside from the 60 sports clubs that all postgraduates are welcome to join, there are also sport-related activities exclusively for postgraduates available to attend now.
When considering your feedback, we found that postgraduates wanted drop-in sessions that take place at times that are convenient to them (out of teaching hours) and don’t involve long-term commitments in terms of time and finance. We also found that most postgraduates preferred doing physical activity with other postgraduates.
So, taking this into account, here are just a few of the things we are offering to postgraduate students who want to get involved with sport.
Wednesdays, 5.30PM, Yoga, £1
Yoga is a fantastic way to relax your mind and body and to relieve stress. We hold a postgraduate yoga session every Wednesday at 5.30pm in Zicer 2.03 and all abilities are welcome. It’s only £1 per time and you can come as much or as little as you like, there is no need to book, just come along! We are currently working to try and get one of these sessions available on the weekend as well. Previously you had to bring your own mat to these sessions, but we now have yoga mats available for students to rent.
Bring your postgraduate campus card to the SU reception in Union House, pay £1, and we’ll give you a ticket to swim. Just head over to the Sportspark and use your ticket to get into the pool!
We are currently organising a flexible running club for postgraduate students so keep your eyes peeled for more information to come on this.
These activities are all great ways to get involved in sport as a postgraduate, but I believe there should be much more access to sport for postgraduates. Here at postgraduate(su) we are working hard to deliver this, and we want to see more from UEA to help with this. We want to see more drop-in sessions so that postgraduates don’t have to make a financial commitment, we want to see more sessions on the weekends and out of teaching hours, and we want to see better variety.
