What is Push for our Paramedics?
uea(su) and UEA Paramedic Society are leading a national campaign to lobby for changes to the funding structure for Paramedic Science degrees. We believe that funding should be avaialble to Paramedic Science students to cover additional course costs associated with studying a non-medical health course, such as placement travel and accommodation requirements, and that the government should bring funding for degree level Paramedic Science courses in line with Nursing, Midwifery and other subjects allied to medicine.

Prior to August 2016 UK home students studying Nursing, Midwifery and subjects allied to medicine (including Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy) were eligible for a means-tested NHS bursary. Paramedic Science was one of the only subjects allied to medicine which was exempt from NHS bursary arrangements, and instead students studying a BSc in Paramedic Science have always been required to take out a repayable student loan. In 2016 the government scrapped the NHS bursary available to students studying Nursing, Midwifery and the Allied Health professions, and after consultation replaced this with a student loan system whereby students were eligible to an increased loan amount. The government also agreed that a expenses system for travel and duel accommodation required for practice placement would be available to students. However, Paramedic Science (BSc) remains an exception to this system, and students are required to pay for their placement costs out of the standard student finance amount available to them (the same as students on courses that do not require additional travel to placement). This means Paramedic Science students are under significant financial pressure, and often can not afford the additional course costs that they are subject to.
How can you get involved?
We are asking students to get on board by writing to their MP to request for the issue to be re-visited in the Houses of Commons. Want to get involved? Here's what you need to do -
1) Sign the campaign petition at the link above or by going here
2) Go to https://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps/https://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps/ and type in your postcode to find the name and parliamentary address of your local MP
3) Download a copy of our draft letter to MPs here. Think about adding in some of your own experiences, and change the name and contact details to reflect who you are contacting. If you are able to, you might want to include a sentence in the letter requesting to meet with your MP to discuss the issue in more depth. If your MP is happy to meet and you would like some support in what to take with you to the meeting, get in touch by emailing Liv.Grosvenor@uea.ac.uk.
4) Share with your friends! We want as many people involved as possible, whether you're a Paramedic Science student, or a Health Education ally, you can help make a difference. If you would like a campaign pack with the design materials included again email Liv.Grosvenor@uea.ac.uk and we will be happy to share them with you.
