Go Global - Cinema society movie marathon

Tuesday 18 May 2021, 7am - 10pm

Teleparty

Celebrate the (near-enough) end of the academic year by joining Cinema Society for their Go Global Movie Marathon on the 18th May!

Using the Teleparty browser extension (which requires Netflix), Cinema Society will be screening four international films throughout the day: Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), Wadjda (2012), Atlantics (2019), and Roma (2018).

A link to the screenings will be posted nearer the time. See you there!

Our Go Global movie marathon for Cinema Society will feature four films, each of which explore a different culture. To access these events, you’ll need to download the Teleparty extension, which you can find at www.netflixparty.com. Once you’ve installed it, you should see a red ‘TP’ icon at the top of your screen. To join the screening, click this icon once you’ve clicked on the link for the film.

Our timetable is as follows:

12pm: Roma (2018) – Set in the 1970s, Roma follows the life of Cleo, a live-in housekeeper working for a middle-class family. An exploration of social class in Mexico, the film is a semi-autobiographical take on director Alfonso Cuarón’s upbringing.

3pm: Atlantics (2019) – Set in Senegal, Atlantics surrounds the life of Ada and partner Souleiman. The film explores issues relating to the refugee crisis, class and grief. It is directed Mati Diop, the first black woman to compete for the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

5.30pm: Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) – This Indian comedy-drama focuses on the dysfunctional Mehras, a family who invite their friends on a cruise in celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary.

9pm: Wadjda (2012) – The first female-directed feature film in Saudi Arabia, Wadjda follows the eponymous young girl as she struggles to navigate life in a patriarchal society.
