Now some three decades since 808 State first graced the arena with their game changing electronica, the band remain in a unique position as one of the prime originators of UK dance music, having arrived on the scene early which saw them shape dance music from their first releases.
Initially fuelled by the emergent music technology of the late Eighties, the band, came to define their inimitable style and sounds, combining human warmth and delicacy to modern machine music to creating abstract, artistic techno with harder melodic edges that has remained timeless throughout their career. Initially defined to many with their breakthrough singles "Pacific", "Cubik" and "In Yer Face", released across fine imprints such as ZTT and the Tommy Boy in the United States, the band were the first electronica band to craft long form dance music albums, well before the likes of Leftfield and Orbital to whom they are often compared released their debut LPs.
Now recording their sixth full studio album "Transmission Suite", tracks from which are to be premiered exclusively on the upcoming tour, "808 State : 30 Live" will highlight the bands contribution to dance music's past and present forms with the band set to perform the better and less known tracks form their remarkable catalogue alongside the new material in a new set with reworked arrangements across all nine shows.
As their legacy is continually name-checked, revived and newly appreciated by the younger generations, the best modern remixers such as 2 Many DJ's and BICEP have laid down their versions of 808’s tunes that came to inspire them whilst other projects such as Jeremy Deller's Acid Brass recognise the impact and reach that 808 State’s music has had.
Realising early on that the future of dance music lay with the album format, 808 State came to issue genre defining LP's from their first with ZTT Records "Ninety", which came to characterise that period of early acid house. Then as part of the explosion of Manchester artists, the band began to cross over to rock and indie crowds, something that then found its way into their music with their next, the still hugely rated release, 1991's double album "ex:el".
Across their subsequent albums "Gorgeous", "Don Solaris" and then "Output Transmission", 808 continued to experiment with new forms and styles, bringing drum and bass and other elements to techno whilst always seeking to move forward and create.
The band were also the first to bring in guest vocalists across their output and have collaborated with the likes of Bjork, Manic Street Preachers' James Dean Bradfield, Elbow's Guy Garvey and a whole host of others which set the format for many subsequent cross over indie / dance tracks.
Now based at Old Granada Studios in Manchester, recording new material, it is the ongoing inventiveness, sense of adventure and their well-honed production craft that have kept 808 State at the top of their production games throughout their career.
As one of the very first fully live techno acts to hit the road, their live reputation has always been formidable with recent concerts at the likes of London's Printworks and Moogfest in North Carolina highlighting that they remain one of dance music's best live performers.
Don’t miss the opportunity to catch one of dance music's most revolutionary acts in a reworked and remodelled outing with "808 State : 30 Live" later this year.
About the tour, the band commented;
“To celebrate 30 years of 808 State we'll be taking to the road for a special UK tour at the end of the year. "808 : 30 "is a new show where we will perform new live versions from our back catalogue, and we’ll also showcase brand new material from our forthcoming album “Transmission Suite”. We are really pleased that LONE will be joining us on the tour.”
Sharing similar soundscapes to 808 State themselves, LONE's eminent discography includes such critically acclaimed albums as "Galaxy Garden" and "Reality Testing", has seen him signed to the legendary R&S Records to release the classic "Airglow Fires" and remix the likes of Radiohead, Disclosure, Friendly Fires and Underworld.
LONE's sets sees him weave in and out of his considerable catalogue alongside an audio visual tapestry and his approach takes in elements of house, soul, hip hop and techno, all combined with the artistic touches one has come to expect from one of UK electronica's most respected breakthrough producers.
LONE said about joining 808 State on the tour;
“There was me and my mate Walshy when we first got into the hardcore rave scene back in 1994. He had a box full of rave tapes and videos at his house, which we used to go through, and one day, one of the tapes we put on was 808 State's 'In Yer Face’. I played it on in my mum's car and it was then I realised it was possible to incorporate proper heart and melody in to the context of 'rave' music. That was my first big push and inspiration to making my own music”.
