In New York City, Jamie and Cathy meet, fall in love and get married. The relationship is explored and exposed through separate timelines; Jamie’s is shown chronologically, whereas Cathy’s is shown in reverse. Their careers, like their timelines, are on separate paths. Jamie is a successful author, whereas Cathy is an aspiring actress. They attempt to reconcile their vastly different experiences through the music of Jason Robert Brown, but ultimately we see the relationship deteriorate over the five years in which the show takes place.
