Does sailing float your boat?
UEA Sailing and Powerboat club welcomes people of all abilities! Whether you have lots of racing experience, have never sailed, or just fancy a day on the water we cater for all. Sailing is offered both Saturdays and Sundays with races to join every weekend! With lots of opportunities out on the water, racing theory sessions on Tuesdays (often in the bar don’t worry!) and many socials throughout the year, UEA Sailing and Powerboat is a really fun club to be part of.
Membership for UEA Sailing and Powerboat includes membership at WBOYC (Waveny and Oulton Broad Yacht Club) which enables us to use their facilities and race with them every week! At WYBOC we have a fleet of Fireflys which we compete in as well as Laser 2’s, Laser 2000’s and our Vago! We compete at BUCS and BUSA as well as local competitions and we are always looking to attend more competitions. Your membership includes everything you need to go sailing; wetsuits, buoyancy aids, spray jackets etc.
Sailing alternates between Saturdays and Sundays enabling those who play on other sports teams to also sail!
We offer primarily four types of sessions:
General Sailing - an opportunity to get out of the water and have some fun! Suitable for all abilities, but if you’ve never sailed before this is where you can learn! There will be mini on shore theory at lunch time discussing sailing techniques and learning new skills run by one of our RYA qualified instructors.
Racing Training (on the water) - these are sessions which focus on how to race to the best of our ability! We practice racing techniques on the water accompanied by quick theory catch up’s over lunch. Our qualified race officer leads these sessions.
Racing Training (on shore) - These are our Tuesday theory sessions which anyone is very welcome to attend! They are quick sessions on racing skills and often take place over a drink in blue bar.
Racing with WBOYC - This is when we join WBOYC and race against them! The timings of these sessions are down to WBOYC in the winter its usually once a week on Sundays and in the summer on both Saturdays and Sundays! These are again open to anyone and great race experience as well as a laugh (as one boat is bound to mess up the start!).
We offer a range of heavily subsidised RYA courses from beginners if you’ve never sailed (RYA level 1) up to instructor! As well as powerboat, safety boat and first aid courses.
We are proud to be part of the University Sailing Sustainability Challenge having achieved bronze level!
Throughout the year we have a range of socials ranging from games of Laser Tag in town to Sailing to the Pub to the ever popular Sports Night in the blue bar every Wednesday and our annual end of year dinner!
