Capoeira is a game, it is dance, it is fight, it is of war and it is of peace, it is of culture, of music, it is a portion of things.
– Mestre Suassuna
Originating in Brazil, Capoeira was practiced by slaves who used it as a means to preserve their culture as well as a methods to practice techniques of escape, evasion, and combat. Nowadays, Capoeira is less used as a symbol of rebellion, and is now played as a game between two Capoeiristas at a time. Capoeira has a much more casual atmosphere than other martial arts, while, technically, the object is to bring your opponent to the ground or kick them in the head, the way you win a game is to have the other person leaving it wanting to play you again.
Not only is there a society within UEA, there is an active and growing community of skilled and friendly Capoeiristas which train regularly within the City of Norwich who provide our excellent instuction. The city classes are free for the first session you join, and, with decades of experience and some mind blowing moves, are definitely something to experience!
Overall, the society offers to show you a new skill, improved physical health, as well as opened eyes to a new community.
