Welcome to UEA Fencing!
*Events containing the tickets for clubnights, tasters and beginners courses are at the bottom of the page*
We provide an opportunity for UEA students to take part in the fast paced combat sport of Fencing. Beginners, experienced, advanced or social fencers are all welcome and have access to professional coaching and lessons from our advanced members. We currently have two coaches, our head coach Rob Johnson, and beginners coach Ben Bone, both of whom have attended UEA. All three weapons are used and taught at the club: Foil, Epee, and Sabre. UEA Fencing is consistently one of UEA's top performing BUCS teams and is ideal for the aspiring and the accomplished fencer alike. As well as fencing, we have an active social side to the club with our Socials Secs organising a variety of socials throughout the year including sports nights, pub crawls, and Christmas and Easter meals.
CHANGES DUE TO COVID-19 (APPLIES TO EVERYONE)
Firstly, some essential COVID-19 stuff. This is super important to allow our sessions to run, so please read the bullet points if you’re planning on coming to any fencing sessions at all, even if it’s just a one-off or for a taster.
· Please bring a facemask to each session, this is compulsory. Obviously, if you have any COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed to somebody who has symptoms, do not attend the session and self-isolate at home.
· Before each individual session you must book a ticket here on our SU page – this is so we can keep track of numbers (there are of course capacity limits in place). This is for ALL sessions, including the beginners’ course and tasters. We will check tickets each session.
· At the beginning of each session a survey must be filled out, please bring your phone to fill this out on. Because of this we ask that you meet (socially distanced from one another) outside the Sportspark 15 minutes before the session start time – there is limited space inside before our session starts. This a compulsory track and trace measure by UEAsport.
FREE DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT TASTER SESSION – MONDAY 5TH OCTOBER (PROVISIONAL DATE)
If you’re interested in trying out fencing for the first time, we will be holding a free ‘Do something different’ taster session on Monday 5th October, from 8pm – 10pm. The session will be held in Hall 2 of the Sportspark, but we ask that you meet us outside the Sportspark at 7:45, for reasons outlined above.
The taster aims to give you a feel for fencing, which will be ran by our coaches Rob and Ben. Kit will be provided for you to use, which adheres to the COVID safety requirements.
What you need: Come dressed in sportswear with ideally LONG bottoms (leggings/tracksuit style), bring a facemask (this is compulsory), your campus card and a phone to complete the COVID surevy on. We’d also recommend a bottle of water.
BEGINNERS - FROM MONDAY 12TH OCTOBER (EXCLUDING FREE TASTER)
If you’ve never fenced before (Or haven’t in a long time/want a refresh), this section is for you!
Starting from Monday the 12th of October, we will be running our beginners’ course! The beginners course runs for 8+ weeks and will get you to grips with using all 3 weapons, with each session running for an hour (you will either fence from 8-9pm or 9-10pm). The course aims to take you from never having fenced before, to being able to fence freely with the rest of the club. So, if you enjoyed the taster session, this is perfect for you!
To take part, you must purchase the beginners course membership from our SU page, at £20. If you are attending the beginners’ course, you do NOT at any point need to purchase the standard fencing membership. If you wish to continue fencing with us after the beginners’ course has ended, simply purchase the £15 top up! Again, aim to arrive 15 minutes before your start time outside to fill out the COVID survey.
INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED MEMBERS – FROM WEDNESDAY 7TH OCTOBER
There are two sessions a week which you are welcome to attend!
Mondays 8-10pm in Hall 2, and Wednesdays 6-7:50pm in the back half of Hall 1.
On these nights we train together as a club, however naturally things will be looking a little different due to COVID. We will have 3 pistes set up, with 6 people to a piste. We ask that you stick to your piste and do not mix, due to current national COVID guidelines and those outlined by British fencing.
Depending on numbers of each weapon, club nights will consist of free fencing, ladders/poules, and the opportunity for one-on-one coaching. On Mondays we will not have formal coaching available while the beginners’ course is running, as they get priority. On the Wednesday however, there will be bookable slots for coaching.
If you have your own kit, please bring it along as it greatly helps us. If you need to borrow some kit, please let us know in advance if possible. We have kit available to borrow, however we need to ensure we are working within COVID guidelines!
Club membership is £35 for the year, and SAM will also need to be purchased (as with every UEA sports club).
Like all other clubs and sports at UEA, you will first need a SAM (Sports Association Membership), which you can either purchase online through the UEA SU website.
Norfolk Fencing Club also runs on a Wednesday directly after our session. Norfolk club currently (and very kindly) let us fence at their club for no charge, as long as you have a UEA fencing membership. However, the rules from British fencing state that you CANNOT attend both a UEA and Norfolk session on a Wednesday. If you are interested in fencing with Norfolk fencing club, you will need to book a slot directly through them, although priority will be given to their members.
