Welcome to UEA's famous Creative Writing Society, where students from across university come together to do what they love: write! Whether you're in the middle of your seventh bestseller or have never even picked up a pen, it doesn't matter - there's something for everyone at CWS!
We hold workshops every Wednesday from 3-5, with a different theme each week. If you can think of it, we cover it: genre, form, style, even specific writers! One week we'll be looking at what makes a good thriller, or a well-rounded character, the next we might be exploring love-poems and limericks. We aim to work with things you're already familiar with, alongside newer topics, to test your comfort zone and experiment with new ideas. Reading out your writing is also encouraged, and we're always happy to give constructive (but friendly!) criticism, to help you redraft and improve your ideas!
As well as all these different workshops, we also run regular open mics! These are for members to share what they've been working on (both in and out of workshops), by taking the stage and reading, spitting, screaming your work aloud for all to hear - be that prose, poetry, or scribblings on a used tissue. Anything goes at our literary free-for-alls! (Except used tissues. Type it up. Gross.)
Of course, CWS is not only about writing. We're also a very friendly, social society. More often than not, workshops are followed by a trip to the union pub (drinking optional!) and you're more than welcome to meet us there if you can't make a workshop itself! We also run pub crawls and varied society outings throughout the semester!
CWS is a great society to meet like minded people, who come from very different backgrounds, all connected by a common interest. Norwich is by far the best place for a writer to be, with open-mics and countless literay events throughout the city, and CWS is proud to be part of it!
