Coronavirus – An Update from Your Welfare Officer

Hello everyone,

As you may well know by now a flat on campus is currently in self-isolation. I understand this can create fear and anxiety for many whether that be students and staff on campus, parents of those who are enrolled at UEA and the wider community of Norfolk. So far there have been no confirmed cases of Coronavirus at UEA or Norfolk as the self-isolation is a precautionary measure.

As a Students’ Union we stand by the University’s response to cancel all events and move teaching to Blackboard. This includes LCR club nights and the Edge Conference that was planned to take place tomorrow on the 14th March.

In terms of societies and sports clubs all events are cancelled so I advise you check with the groups you are a part of to see what plans they have and for up-to-date details of sports fixtures contact UEASport.

If you have any concerns about how Covid-19 may affect your studies in any way please be assured that conversations are happening constantly and plans are being put in place at top priority. The University are turning to remote teaching and assessment. I appreciate this is all a bit vague and broad right now so I apologise and commend you for your patience. The UEA website has a FAQs page that is constantly being updated so if you have any concerns I recommend you check that out for all factually correct information surrounding the Coronavirus which you can find here.

We all need to do our bit to avoid causing and spreading panic, I understand tensions and worries are high but if you are young and without underlying health conditions please be wary of others so please do not stock pile on items such as toilet paper and anti-bacterial hand wash as it is not fair for those who are more at risk. I encourage you all to inform yourself on Covid-19 and if you are experiencing symptoms call 111 and stay at home. For more information, see the NHS website.

The Student Union have a zero tolerance policy on racism and harassment. There have been reports of harassment on campus as a result of coronavirus, be kind to each other and do not become part of the problem. If you experience or witness any acts of harassment I encourage you to record it (anonymously or with personal details) on report and support which you can find here.

advice(su) is still open 10am-4pm so feel free to get in touch with one of our advisors or reach out to student services for support. If you would like to meet with myself or any of the officers and go for a coffee feel free to drop me an email at [email protected]

Remember! Take care of yourselves, wash your hands for 20 seconds, be kind to each other and stop hoarding all the bog roll!

Love only,

A
